The RARE Foundation “Everyday Hero” Writing Scholarship is for high school seniors planning to attend a Michigan college, university or post secondary school after graduating. RARE’s purpose is to engage young people in identifying everyday heroes throughout our state and through the process of discovery and writing, to become inspired about life’s possibilities.

The amount of each scholarship is $2,500.

The RARE Foundation reserves the right to determine the number of scholarship awards.

Only Michigan high school graduating seniors who will be attending a Michigan college, university or post-secondary school are eligible.

All submissions become the property of the RARE Foundation and may be published on its website and in its educational materials.

Essays must be based on a living Michigan resident.

The essay should include:

  • The full name of the hero
  • Where they currently work or where they have worked in the past
  • What their job is
  • How they have excelled at work or what makes them a quality employee
  • Specific examples of how they make a difference in the community
  • Specific examples supporting why this person is an Everyday Hero (character values he/she possess, community activities he/she is involved in, etc.).

The award will be made in the form of a check paid directly to the Michigan institution in which the student is actually enrolled.

Deadline for entries is December 1, 2009.  It MUST be postmarked by this date.
Winners will be announced in May 2010.

Entries must be one-page typed, single spaced with one-inch margins, font size 12pt, in Arial or New Times Roman font type. It must be accompanied by an official scholarship entry form signed by the student and a teacher or advisor. To view and print the Entry Form, Click Here.
